RoboCop 1987

Paul Verhoeven's humor is not particularly subtle but RoboCop works well because of its nature which demands everything to be so plainly in your face. There is a widening gap between the rich and poor in this country, and unbridled industry (this one) means that every event must be a counter to that. Piece by piece, this dystopian world makes sense in terms of the destructive nature of society's demands only to "advance," from the news broadcasts to the clear goals of the businessmen running the lot to the obscene advertising.
